Project 1: Ibizan-inspired sanctuary

Overview

The brief for this project was to reimagine a clinical and dated bathroom into a calm and cocooning space. The original bathroom lacked personality. Glossy finishes, cold tones, harsh lighting and standard fixtures made the room feel impersonal and uninviting. Limited space and awkward angles added to the challenge.

What we love

We love how natural materials soften the space, neutral sun-washed tones enhance light and layered textures help to create depth and comfort. This design demonstrates how thoughtful material choices and subtle styling can completely redefine a space without the need for major structural changes.

Design concept

We drew on our client’s love of the Mediterranean aesthetic, to design an Ibizan-inspired retreat. Our priority was to introduce warmth, texture and cohesion without overwhelming the room. At the same we wanted the design to deliver a spa-like experience by creating a calming, organic space that evoked the relaxed, sun-bleached style associated with Ibiza. All the while maintaining practicality and functionality.

This transformation delivered a serene, inviting bathroom that felt a world away from its previous incarnation. What was once a functional, clinical room was now a calming sanctuary – rich in texture, warmth, and an understated rustic charm. The space now embodied the deceptive simplicity and natural beauty of Ibizan interiors, which is, of course, where their magic lies.

Key elements of the transformation

Introduction of reclaimed wood

Custom cabinetry and bath panelling were crafted from aged, reclaimed wood. The soft tones, natural grain and imperfections deliberately chosen to add warmth and authenticity. In an otherwise neutral scheme, dark wood was used to anchor the scheme.

Softened architectural elements

Clean lines were retained but softened by using tactile artisan finishes. Angular units were replaced with rustic cupboards hand-built from plaster and painted. Open shelving made from old scaffold boards took the place of wall cupboards giving the room a more relaxed, lived-in feel.

Ambient, layered lighting

Harsh overhead lights were replaced with a central multi-directional light fitting which allowed light to be channelled into awkward corners and recesses. Softer, warm-toned bulbs contributed to the relaxed sanctuary-like ambience we were after, whilst still providing a practical level of illumination. The lighting was layered with additional sources such as lanterns and candles which take the space to another level at night.

Minimalist, organic decor

Accessories were kept simple and intentional. Ceramic vessels, woven baskets, greenery, and neutral textiles were used to introduce Mediterranean character without adding clutter and to imbue the room with a chic informality.

Cohesive palette

A restrained colour scheme of whites, creams, soft beiges, and natural wood tones worked together in worked harmony to unify the space, maximise light and reflect Ibiza’s relaxed coastal vibe.
