Project 2: A vintage romance

Overview

Transforming this large, characterless bedroom and adjoining ensuite, was all about maximising the amazing natural light available, along with some beautiful period features, particularly the ceiling. The redesign focused on using the space thoughtfully to create cosiness whilst retaining a feel of airiness and combining the old and new to give the room a serene ambience and timeless elegance.

What we love

We love how the space feels effortlessly calm and uncluttered while still rich in detail. The layering of textiles – quilted bedding, woven rugs, and soft upholstery – adds warmth. Subtle decorative touches, such as throws, cushions and candles add interest and softness to the space, while the ensuite’s freestanding tub sets the tone for a place entirely created with rest and relaxation in mind.

Design concept

The design sought to bring together soft minimalism, vintage romance and heritage charm.  A muted, modern palette of warm whites, neutrals and greys, was key to the successful pairing of classic and contemporary. Carefully selected pieces of vintage and antique furniture, each with a gorgeous patina and a story to tell, added character and depth. Continuing this approach in the ensuite, enabled us to achieve flow and cohesiveness between the sleeping space and the bathroom.

Overall, what we achieved was a spacious, light-filled retreat that still managed to be comfortable and inviting. This transformation delivered a cohesive, tranquil sanctuary that balanced elegance with comfort. The bedroom and ensuite work harmoniously as a unified space inviting, restful, and timeless. Perfect for unwinding at any time of the day.

Key elements of the transformation

Maximising light

Minimalist window treatments, mirrors and a light colour palette, all contributed to an enhanced sense of brightness and airiness. The room faced out to other properties so the use of slatted blinds in white wood, allowed both light and privacy. And despite the windows being large, the style and colour of the blinds meant they blended beautifully into the background.

Flow and continuity

It was important that the bedroom and ensuite had a harmonious relationship with each other. Introducing unifying elements was a priority in this project. Echoing the bedroom’s simplicity and successful combination of classic and contemporary, in the bathroom, ensured the two rooms became one seamless haven.

Warm, neutrals and layered textures

A thoughtful choice of warm neutrals enabled us to simultaneously make the room light and airy yet still inviting and relaxing. Interest was added with layers and textures such as tumbled linen bedding, loose sofa covers and generous cushions, woven baskets also provided useful and beautiful storage, with jute rugs adding depth and a feeling of comfort.

Salvaged classics

We gave the room an understated grandeur and timeless appeal with the use of old and interesting furniture – a carved French bed frame, a vintage bedside table and dressing table and an antique French wardrobe straight out of a chateau in Gasgony. Pieces like these can be hard to find, but they’re worth the effort. They never fail to bring a special energy and richness to a space.
